'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' Mathew 25:40
We never know the story of those we encounter. God puts us in place every day of our lives. Every breath we take is planned. Every action we take is orchestrated. It is up to each of us individually to decide if we heed to his command. If we acknowledge the voice within us.
I recently heard the testimony of a young college bound male student. He said, "I lost my mother when I was very young. She was assassinated in front of me when I was only six months old. I have depended on the kindness of others every since. I know now that at times it is strangers who will do more for me than my own family. Without them I would be nowhere. With them I have a chance. Big or small, I need to know that they are in my corner. That feeling means everything. It means I matter. It means I have not been forgotten."
God may have put us in the life path of the next President of the United States or the scientist who will provide a cure for all cancers. We might have an opportunity to shape the human rights perspectives of the next ambassador to Zimbabwe. In any case, we must not underestimate the task we have been gifted.
I grew up poor poor. Well I did not brush my teeth with charcoal or walk to school with no shoes on but times were sugar on toast for lunch hard enough. Were it not for my school counselors, church ministers, and "you are truly special" teachers, who knows where I might be today.
My point in this. We have a finite number of breaths God breaths into us each and every day. Why not exhale with meaning. Exhale with a steadfast determination to PAY IT FORWARD. Make this planet better.
