The Mole People Beneath Us

Mole people? Now that is a term I have never heard. Let's see a mole by definition means a small burrowing insectivorous mammal with dark velvety fur, a long muzzle, and very small eyes. At least that is one definition. In the context of this blog post, Mole people is a term used to refer to homeless people living under large cities in abandoned subway, railroad, flood, and sewage tunnels and heating shafts. These people are also sometimes referred to as "tunnel people" or  "tunnel dwellers". The most astonishing thing, many of these mole people have formed organized communities, yes organized societies with their own cultural norms, some utilities such as rigged up electricity, and even living quarters with separate rooms. Though it is unclear just how many mole people exist in these tunnels beneath us, it may surprise you to know they exist in the thousands and not just as adults and not just as drug addicted mentally ill derelicts. Yes complete families live in these hollow forgotten crevices they refer to as home.

So now you know. Perhaps you already knew. It is much easier to pretend this unconscionable style of living does not exist since mole people are mostly hidden away out of sight living in nearly complete darkness. So the rest of us can continue along our merry way. We can go on pretending that out of sight out of mind means something. That is until we begin to realize that mole are people. A people of the human race. And we have an innate human obligation to do what we can to bring light into the lives of  our brothers and sisters who for reasons only they know, have lost their way beneath us when indeed he should be living beside us.

Leviticus 25:35-36 ESV /
“If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall
support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with
you. Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother
may live beside you.

I love being around people. I would rather live falling than break my spirit never trying anything hard. This blog is about trying and retrying life.
