As such, we will do anything to hold things together in our family. We will stay longer, pray stronger, care harder. We will eat last, sleep less, get better soon. We will punch a black bear in the face, beat a stick at a rabid fox,
stand firm in a raging tornado. We will lose so others can win, laugh when we want to cry, make peace when it is our feelings that hurt. Sleep right next to the child with strep, comforting, consoling, pacifying. Step back knowing we could lead. There are no special awards for what we do. No extra pay, no special fund we can draw against as we build "mother wealth".
Women "do" because we are wired to do. We are masters at dual. Great caregivers by day and the best friend and mate at night, all without showing the POW! behind oops of our day. Women shine brightest when we know we are being counted on big time. If we love you, we will be the last to turn out the lights on a flickering relationship.
We know how to restrain ourselves when our strongest inclination is to forge ahead, just so lessons can be learned and mistakes can be realized. We will receive that lone lop sided clay baked coin dish and display it prominently next to our finest crystal. We will put even the 100th citizenship award in a frame because by not doing so might crush a young spirit. We will hold hands in the movies extra sweetly. We will pretend like we have forgotten how it feels to be met curbside at the airport, to get the "just because" note on the pillow or the feeling of the skipped heart beat when we experience our car door opened. Mostly we want it never to stop.
As women, we represent a strong club of, "I don't want credit, I just want to feel like the difference I make is realized." Our anthem is sung across generations, across vast oceans and seas. In huts, palaces, flats, bungalows, apartments, high rises, tents, and penthouses alike. Our anthem is heard in brown, black, yellow, mulatto, and white. It is on the lips of young and old. It includes the words that we yearn to hear; words like love, thank you, nice touch, appreciate, great, wonderful, and wow you should not have.
All we ask for is our opportunity to dress up like beautiful book ends, be displayed in nice places, be appreciated for all those elements we hold together so nicely, so creatively.
When we are feeling really squeezed....we would love to see a couple of our oops taken away just long enough for us to adjust our bindings.
Women are beautiful book ends.
